SCVFD Extracts Patient in Motor Vehicle Accident

SCVFD Personnel Extricating Patient from Vehicle

Units from the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a one vehicle accident on Tuesday night, February 19, 2019 around 9:15pm. The accident took place near 781 Sharps Chapel Road. The caller advised dispatch she had lost control and ran off the roadway.

SCVFD Rescue 51 and Engine 54 responded to the scene and found that the car had ran off the roadway down an embankment and lodged into the side of a building. The driver reported only minor injuries but was unable to get out of the vehicle since it was lodged between a embankment and the building.

SCVFD rescue team extricated the driver from the vehicle and she was transported by Union County EMS to an area hospital to be checked out for minor injuries from the accident. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was investigating the accident.

SCVFD Explorers Attend Winterfest 2019

The Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department Explorer Post #510 recently made their yearly journey to the Winterfest Explorer Conference and Competition held in Gatlinburg on February 8 – 10, 2019.

The SCVFD Explorer Cadets competed against several teams from many different states in the region. They competed in Rapid Dress, Denver Drill, Pittsburg Drill, Triple Lay and Vent, Enter,- Search.

The SCVFD Explorer team this year was Johnathan Blanton, Carson Nicley, Zach Jones, Michael Scraggs and Lindsey Vanover. Explorer Advisors in attendance were Chief Chris Upton, Kevin Brantley, Dustin Ray, Matthew Brogan and Savannah Brogan.

The team did not place in the top 3 of any of the events, but did very well considering all of the competition that was present this year. Chief Upton said he and the department were very proud of the Explorers for their hard work and effort they showed this year. The team is now preparing for another event in a few months that will take place in North Carolina.

SCVFD Receives New Little Giant Ladder Through Grant

The Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department recently received a grant from the Little Giant Ladder Company. The department was able to obtain a new Overhaul Ladder that will be carried on one of the fire engines. The ladder is valued at over $1,000.00. SCVFD is the first fire department in this area to have one of these new ladders.

This new ladder complies with NFPA Standards and counts for ISO points for the department.

The Little Giant Ladder Company recently started making ladders for the fire service and this new ladder has many capabilities that will assist firefighters on emergency scenes. This ladder has many features that other ladders do not have with several adjustments that help firefighters do their jobs safer. This ladder also has night time glowing rungs, tip and guide wheels and roof and rafter hooks.

Chief Chris Upton said he would like to thank the Little Giant Ladder Company and member Dustin Ray of the SCVFD for their assistance in receiving this much needed and appreciated new piece of equipment for the department.

Sharps Chapel Fire Department Receives Grant Funds for New Medic Gear Bags

The Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department recently received grant funding from the Firefighters Charitable Foundation to assist them in purchasing (3) three new medic bags for their response vehicles. Chief Chris Upton said they had recently applied for the grant to upgrade current medic bags that were carried on the trucks. The older bags had been used for several years and were in bad condition. Upton said these new bags were more durable and easier for the first responders to carry and use when responding to first responder calls in the area. Upton said he and the department would like to thank the Firefighters Charitable Foundation for this new equipment.

House Fire on Leadmine Bend Rd. and Upcoming Benefit for Family

SCVFD was dispatched to residential fire on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 4:51 pm at 1360 Leadmine Bend Road. Engine 52 arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from one end of residence. Engine 53 also responded to the scene. The fire was located in the flooring of the home. No one was at home when fire started. Sharps Chapel was assisted by units from Northeast Union, Maynardville, Paulette and Luttrell fire departments. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. The fire was believed to have started from an electrical problem near the heat and air unit going into the bottom of the home. Several personal items were saved. The home received smoke and water damage and structural damage in the flooring.

Sharps Chapel VFD Assists in Structure Fire

On Saturday, January 5, 2019, Sharps Chapel VFD assisted Northeast Union VFD on a structure fire. Engine 52 and Engine 53 arrived on scene to assist with water supply and manpower. The fire was on Maynardville Highway and the roadway was partially closed during the fire for the fire apparatus providing water to the scene. Maynardville and Paulette VFD’s also assisted on the fire. Below are a few photos from the scene.

SCVFD Visits Sharps Chapel Elementary

Sharps Chapel VFD made the annual trip to Sharps Chapel Elementary to teach the kids about fire safety. The visit was scheduled on Halloween this year so firefighters got to see all the spooks. The day was spent teaching the kids about fire safety, going out to see the fire truck, and also the kids got to meet a special visitor, Smokey the Bear. The Tennessee Division of Forestry attended to talk about preventing wildfires and Smokey made the trip with them to meet the kids. Thanks to the Sharps Chapel Elementary School staff for allowing the time for fire safety and the Tennessee Division of Forestry for coming to speak as well.

Ice Causes Accident on Maynardville Highway

Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched to an accident on Maynardville Highway just north of the 33 Bridge this morning around 9:30 A.M. Freezing rain in the area has turned roadways into ice. Rescue 51 responded to the accident. A Sharps Chapel firefighter made it on the scene first to discover no injuries in the accident. Rescue 51 was cancelled due to the road conditions and no injuries reported. It is advised to not get out on the roadways today until temperatures rise to above freezing. Icy conditions are still being reported around Union County. If you do have to travel, use extreme caution. Please remember to move over and slow down when passing emergency vehicles or motorist on the side of roadways. Stay warm!

SCVFD Responds to House Fire

Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched to a structure fire on Thursday, November 30, 2017. The call was at around 11:34 PM on Cox Road. Sharps Chapel Engine 51, Engine 52 & Engine 54 responded to the scene. Upon arrival, neighbors were using a garden hose to slow down the spread of fire. Fire crews made an interior attack to fully extinguish the fire and set up ventilation to remove the smoke from the home. The fire started around the chimney of a wood stove in the home. The home did receive some moderate damage but no injuries were reported. Northeast Union VFD Engine 31 and Maynardville VFD Tanker 91 also responded mutual aid for assistance.
