Sharps Chapel VFD Earns 2016 Life Safety Achievement Award

Sharps Chapel VFD Earns 2016 Life Safety Achievement Award

Sharps Chapel, TN -The Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department was recently presented with a Life Safety Achievement Award for its fire prevention accomplishments in 2016 by the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) Fire Research and Education Foundation in partnership with Grinnell Mutual. The award was announced by H. Butch Browning, President of the NASFM Fire Research and Education Foundation.

“When we hear the fire truck coming down the street and see its lights, we know firefighters are responding to someone in trouble. What we don’t know is that these unsung heroes are doing a lot of things behind the scenes that save lives,” said David Miller, Assistant Vice President of Special Investigations at Grinnell Mutual. “The Life Safety Achievement Award recognizes fire departments for their fire prevention programs that have been proven to save lives year after year.”

Since 1994, the Life Safety Achievement Award has recognized local fire prevention efforts that have contributed to reducing the number of lives lost in residential fires. The Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department is one of 160 fire departments across the United States to receive the award this year for recording zero fire deaths in 2016 or reducing fire deaths by at least 10 percent during the year. In addition, award recipients documented active and effective fire prevention programs as well as a clear commitment to reducing the number of house fires in the community.

Although residential fires in the U.S. account for only 20 percent of all fires, they result in 80 percent of all fire deaths. The NASFM Fire Research and Education Foundation is committed to reducing that number.

“Experience tells us that fire prevention activity and public education can significantly reduce life and property loss from residential fires,” Browning said. “Prevention and education are very cost effective compared to the traditional approach of relying on fire suppression.”

VIDEO: SCVFD F500 Training

Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department members, along with other fire agencies in Union County, completed training on the use of F-500 Encapsulated Agent on Saturday. What is F-500? First, F-500 EA has a remarkable ability to cool a fire and surrounding structures, with the ability to absorb 6-10 times more heat energy than plain water.  Instead of scalding steam, F-500 EA releases a warm vapor.  Secondly, F-500 EA encapsulates fuels forming micelles or “chemical cocoons” that render the fuel nonflammable and nonignitable.  Finally, F-500 EA interrupts the free radical chain reaction.  Free radicals are unburned gases produced during the combustion process that turn into smoke and soot.  Inhibiting the chain reaction results in less smoke and toxins and increases visibility. Below is a video from the training session.

Residential Fire on Lakeview Circle

Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched to a residential fire on Lakeview Circle on Saturday, April 22, 2017 around 3:30 PM. Sharps Chapel Engine 51, Engine 52, and Engine 53 all responded (Engine 53 responded to its first structure assignment in Sharps Chapel). Engine 51 arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the roof of the home. No one was home at the time of the fire and nearby neighbors had already entered the home with a water hose prior to SCVFD’s arrival. Fire crews made an interior attack into the home to finish extinguishing the fire. The fire was contained to the wall of origin and appeared to start around an electrical outlet. No injuries were reported. Northeast Union VFD and Maynardville FD responded mutual aid but was cancelled before they arrived on scene. Thanks for the assistance!

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. We would like to thank units from Northeast Union VFD, Paulette VFD, Maynardville VFD, and Luttrell VFD for providing manpower and assisting with water supply.

Sharps Chapel VFD Receives Pumper/Tanker from Pennsylvania

Sharps Chapel VFD is excited to announce that a fire apparatus has been donated to the department. The West Penn Fire Company Inc., located in New Ringgold, Pennsylvania, donated a 1983 Spartan Pumper/Tanker. A few members from the Sharps Chapel VFD made the trip to Pennsylvania earlier this week. After visiting with the West Penn Fire Company members at their station on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, Sharps Chapel members started the long trip to Tennessee with the apparatus. After a 617 mile trip, members backed the new addition in its new home in the early morning hours on Wednesday. The truck is now being worked on to get our equipment and lettering on and hope to have it in service within the next few weeks. This apparatus will be used to respond to fires in our area as well as assist other local departments with mutual aid calls. This truck will be very beneficial in our community, especially in parts of our community with no fire hydrants. The apparatus holds 2,000 gallons of water. Stay tuned for updates on this apparatus. We will post more photos once the work is complete on the truck and is placed in service.

On behalf of the members at the Sharps Chapel VFD, we would like to thank Fire Chief Dennis Fritzinger Jr. and all of our brothers and sisters at West Penn Fire Company Inc. for their hospitality and generosity. We are very grateful for the apparatus and equipment and will be a great asset to our community.
